Key Takeaways & Essential Logistics (TL;DR)
- Strict Underwater Rule: Never lift a starfish out of the water. Exposing sea stars to air blocks their internal vascular system and suffocates them.
- Natural Wild Habitat: Starfish Point is an open public beach, not an aquarium. Sea stars migrate freely across the seagrass beds.
- Ideal Family Stop: Water depth ranges from 6 inches to 3 feet with zero waves, making it the safest stop for young children and toddlers.
- Best Visited via Boat: While you can drive to Starfish Point from Seven Mile Beach (45β50 minutes), visiting as the third stop on a catamaran tour is far more scenic and convenient.
I’m Captain Dave. After navigating the North Sound for 25 years, I consider Starfish Point one of our island’s greatest natural treasures. Situated on the sheltered northern shoreline of Grand Cayman near Cayman Kai and Rum Point, this tranquil sand spit is home to dozens of wild red cushion sea stars (Oreaster reticulatus).
Almost every top 3-stop catamaran excursion pairs the excitement of the Stingray Sandbar with a relaxing visit to Starfish Point. Here is what you need to know to enjoy and protect this unique habitat.
1. The Marine Biology of the Red Cushion Sea Star
Red cushion sea stars are one of the largest sea star species in the Caribbean, frequently growing up to 16 to 20 inches (40 to 50 cm) in diameter.
- Colors: Despite their name, they are not always red. You will encounter individuals colored bright orange, deep crimson, golden yellow, and mottled forest green.
- Locomotion: On their underside, hundreds of tiny hydraulic tube feet (podia) coordinate to slowly glide the sea star across the sand and seagrass beds at speeds of several inches per minute.
- Diet: They feed primarily on micro-algae, decomposing organic matter, and tiny invertebrates found on the surface of the sand and Thalassia seagrass leaves.
2. The DoE Law: How to Handle a Starfish Legally
Under the Cayman Islands National Conservation Act, Starfish Point is designated as the Water Cay Wildlife Interaction Zone.
The Golden Rule: 100% Submerged at All Times
- You may gently cradle a sea star with both open palms beneath its body, resting it in your hands while keeping it completely submerged below the water surface.
- You must never lift any part of the starfish above the water surface β even for a split-second photograph.
Why Air is Fatal to Sea Stars
Sea stars do not have lungs or gills like fish. Instead, they absorb oxygen through tiny papulae (skin gills) and rely on a water vascular system that circulates seawater through their internal canals to operate their tube feet.
- When lifted into the air, air bubbles enter their delicate internal channels, causing air embolisms and fatal tissue damage.
- On top of that, water buoyancy holds up their heavy body mass. The second someone lifts a sea star into the air, gravity strains its fragile internal organs.
3. How to Get to Starfish Point
There are two primary ways to reach Starfish Point:
- By Catamaran Tour (Recommended): 90% of visitors arrive by boat as part of a 3-stop North Sound excursion (Stingray City + Coral Gardens + Starfish Point). Boats anchor 30 yards off the beach in waist-deep water, allowing you to wade ashore.
- By Rental Car (Self-Drive): If you have a rental vehicle, you can drive to the end of Water Cay Road in North Side (near Kaibo). There is free roadside parking and a marked public path to the beach. The drive from Seven Mile Beach takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes through the scenic eastern districts.
